2024 Onannon Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay
Onannon is three people with one goal. The people are Sam Middleton, Kaspar Hermann and Will Byron, each of whom contributed the last letters of their surname to make Onannon. A friendship rooted in winemaking studies and a shared love for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay blossomed during their time at Coldstream Hills in the Yarra Valley in the early 2000s. Crafted from a blend of fruit sourced from five distinct Mornington Peninsula sub-regions—Tuerong, Main Ridge, Shoreham, Merricks, and Flinders—this wine is a true expression of its diverse origins.
On the nose, vibrant aromas of samphire, ripe grapefruit, and apple crumble are layered with hints of spice. The palate delivers a juicy yet savory experience, showcasing umami notes of white mushrooms and white miso, balanced by the delicate sweetness of Scotch Finger biscuit and a flinty, saline edge. A lime-laced finish lingers, tying it all together beautifully. Complex, distinctive, and utterly delightful—such a great thing to drink, as Gary Walsh so aptly describes it.
